How the head coach impacts match execution, why tactical fit matters, and choosing the right leader for your roster.
The Coach Role: A Force Multiplier
On-court outcomes are primarily driven by roster talent and tactical choices. The Head Coach acts as a force multiplier: when your tactics match his philosophy, the team gains a real edge in close finishes — when they don’t, that edge simply never appears.
Coach Fit:
Aligning your live tactics with the coach’s philosophy (e.g. a defensive coach with aggressive pressure) grants your squad a boost to the attributes that drive execution. If your tactics don’t match, there is no penalty — you simply forgo the bonus.
Core Coaching Attributes
Tactics
Determines the size of the fit bonus players receive when your live tactics match the coach’s philosophy.
Rotation
Fatigue sensitivity. High-rotation coaches rest tired stars before burnout occurs.
Development
Part of the coach’s overall rating and salary. In-game youth progression is driven by age, potential (POT) and playing time — this skill does not alter it yet.
Motivation
Part of the coach’s overall rating and salary. The morale-stabilizing and personality-calming effects are not implemented yet — this skill does not drive them.
Coaching Archetypes & Philosophies
Every specialist operates with a dominant philosophy. Pick a coach for the team you are building — and be ready to play his style: matching your live tactics to his archetype earns the fit bonus. The coach’s salary is paid from the same pool as player wages, so an expensive coach directly shrinks your budget for players:
Defensive
Half-court execution, physical paint presence, aggressive perimeter containment.
Offensive
Heavy perimeter spacing, dynamic Pick & Roll reads, ball movement.
Fast-Paced
Early transition shots, high possession counts, relentless rim attacks.
Balanced
Pragmatic, adapts easily to opponent styles and roster constraints.
Contracts & Severance Packages
Terminating a coach mid-contract triggers a mandatory severance pay (50% of remaining salary) drawn from the operations budget — if the funds are insufficient, termination is blocked. Firing also has side effects: player morale and fan support bounce up, but loyal players may react negatively, and the replacement is an automatic interim coach you do not get to choose.
